It’s been far too long since I’ve posted anything here on the ol’ blog…
2 words…
I’m tired.
Monday: Lost Marauders appearance on Hunnypot
Tuesday: Intense evening (don’t ask)
Wednesday: Metallica at The Forum (resulting in whiplash and no voice… well worth it)
Thursday: Marauders gig at the AC Lounge with TAXI
Tonight: Zzzzzzzzzz
It was an exhausting week but a fun one nonetheless. I’m sure you’ll forgive me for making this post short and sweet as I didn’t get home before midnight most nights this week.
G’night.

With all that is going on in my life as of late, I just needed to set aside a few minutes to talk about the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic.
It comes out in on the 12th and I was counting down the days until that day when, on Friday, a buddy sent me a link to get the album… illegally, of course.
I was expecting it to be good since the band had fired long-time producer Bob Rock, and hired the only man that would have even the slightest chance to get the band back on track, Mr. Rick Rubin.
Since the first Beastie Boys rap album, I have probably put more money in Rubin’s pocket than any other music producer. The Beasties, The Chili Peppers, Slayer, System of a Down, etc. have all had the honor of having this guy at the helm for the majority, if not all of their albums. And now recently he’s been working with CSN and Brandi Carlile… the guy is all over the place. What’s more is that Sam’s dad Wayne is his chef so I have a direct line to him to let him know what I think of this new offering from Metallica.
So, what do I think?
I think they pulled it of. I’m not the first to say it but… METALLICA IS BACK!!
I’m going to look past the Napster thing and Lars’ uncontrollable narcissism and touch on some of the tracks here:
The first three tracks are pure energy and the best on the album. Tears came to my eyes throughout the first track, “That Was Just Your Life”. It starts out with a Dark Side of the Moon-esque heartbeat and from there enters the classic Metallica intro harkening back to the days of “Ride the Lightening” and “Master of Puppets.” What’s interesting is how you can hear System of a Down-type licks come through in this track. Funny how things come full circle.
Track two “The End of the Line” is more heaviness with one of the most obnoxious intros to a guitar solo I have ever heard. It’s only a split second of feedback but it just bursts in and throws you back 10 feet and takes you on a bone-crushing ride into the depths of insanity. WTF?!?! It’s awesome in the truest sense of the word.
“Broken, Beat & Scarred” is the third track and maybe my favorite next to the first track. It just has a killer main riff that only Metallica could have come up with. Not to mention the sing-a-long part “SHOW… YOUR… SCARS!!!” I can’t wait to belt that out at the concert in December.
Don’t get me wrong, the whole album isn’t perfect. The major single off the album “The Day that Never Comes” is probably the weakest track on the album followed closely by yet another Unforgiven sequel. “The Day…” just feels like it was slapped together using licks and devices from past songs like “One” and “Motorbreath.” At least they steal from themselves. It seriously sounds like a garage jam that got recorded by accident and then never completed… but with really good recording gear.
The ninth track is “Suicide & Redemption” and it’s the token 10 min. instrumental. Well, at least it used to be “token.” I don’t think there’s been a track like that since the “…And Justice for All” album. It’s not that interesting musically. There are a few killer riffs that should be in regular songs but not an instrumental. It just can’t hold a candle to “Orion,” “To Live is To Die,” or “Call of Ktulu.”
What this album is sorely missing compared to “Ride the Lightening” and “Master of Puppets” is more classical music influence. Maybe Cliff Burton was responsible for bringing that stuff into the mix. There are a couple of instances where they touch on some good harmonies but it’s just too few and far in between.
Apart from the tracks, I was really excited to hear Rob Trujillo make his in-studio debut as I thought he was the perfect choice for bassist after Jason Newstead was gone. In the mix that I have he’s barely noticeable. Funny since most Metallica albums are so bass-heavy. Maybe I just got some overly compressed mp3’s and it totally squeezed out the low end. Hope it’s better on the CD. I’m sure it will be.
Shit, gotta get back to work.
Final Word: I FUCKING LOVE THIS ALBUM. Although it has its shortcomings the riffs still get stuck in my head just like they did back in the days of pre-Black Album Metallica.
Although I have this advanced copy, I still plan on buying it. So should you.
Well done guys!
[UPDATE]
After a little more listening and talking with friends who have listened to the album, I’ve decided that Metallica is back for those of us who have been sticking with the band in hopes of them making good music again. It isn’t for those who dropped the band when the Black Album came out. To those guys and gals, this album will sound like Metallica trying hard to sound like… um… well, Metallica.
With that said, I think this is their best album since “…And Justice For All”. All the albums in between this one and Justice just never sounded like Metallica to me. Even the Black Album never really floated my boat as much as Death Magnetic does.
Go checkout episode #68 of The MannersCast!
My good buddy and co-hosts of the show Trent, decided to include Lost Marauders’ “Midnite Son” on the show! You can skip to about 15:30 into the show to hear us but I urge you to listed to the whole thing cause it’s one of my favorite podcasts.
Why is such a hard-rockin’ outlaw band on a show about manners? Cause we’re fucking rebels!! We go against all conventional wisdom!! AND just like the MannersCast guys, we too are on a never-ending quest to take over the world… Mwahahahaha!!! Oh, I also help Trent out with some graphics from time to time so he’s showing some Marauder love.
Enjoy!!
I’m pissed.
I went and dropped $90 on the new Guitar Hero and I’m really disappointed with it. It just doesn’t have the same vibe as the first two. It’s as if Neversoft ripped the heart and soul out of it and replaced it with utter lameness. They shoulda stuck with Tony Hawk.
My biggest gripe is with how the controller handles fast picking. It doesn’t. In GH 1 & 2, I was able to use a guitar pick to pick the strum bar. Now if I use a pick, the strums don’t register. The motion is too fast for the strum bar or something. You actually have to press the strum bar up or down. This makes it so that your strumming hand can never be more than 2 inches away from the strum bar. It’s so aggravating. This means no Pete Townshend windmills or Billy Joe Armstrong wood-sawing strums. Most people will probably miss this bug completely since it only comes up if you are playing the game as you would a real guitar (which most people don’t do). I haven’t seen any mention of it online yet either, so it’s probably not a big enough problem to warrant a recall or software fix (if that’s even possible).
If the strumming thing wasn’t enough, I think the graphics have made a turn for the worse. In addition, there really isn’t anything new in regards to game play. Of course, I haven’t played online yet so I can’t speak about that new aspect of the game. The last thing that pissed me off were the videos. I purchased all of the videos that were available and they were all a total rip-off. Each one was like 2 minutes long… if that. Much shorter than the ones on the original two games. Needless to say, they didn’t go into too much detail about the making of the game or the recording sessions.
Overall, the branding of the game is all over the place and it doesn’t have a cohesive feel like the second one did AT ALL. The segueway videos had the completely wrong vibe to them as well, playing more like anime than like a gritty rock saga.
The one thing it does have going for it is the songs. They rock.
Overall, this train wreck has officially jumped the shark. Bring on Rock Band!!
Apple finally announced an iPod with enough capacity to hold my entire music collection with enough room to spare for tons of video and photos too. Yup, 160GB of pure Apple love with soon be in my hands. In addition, since I’m lucky enough to deal directly with Apple through my MGM gig, I was able to get the Apple employee discount from my contact at Apple.
Now all I’m waiting on is for my Sprint contract to run out so I can add an iPhone to my collection of Apple gadgets.
I wonder if I can just have my paycheck deposited directly into Apple’s bank account. It would make the whole buying process go so much quicker.
[UPDATE]
So, I’m loving my new iPod. The capacity is immense. I have around 20,000 tracks on it (thank god for the search feature), 30+ movies and I still have 30GB+ available.
Initially the performance was a bit slow. Navigating from screen to screen would take a couple seconds of loading. CoverFlow took even longer. Apple has released 2 updates for it since I got it and the performance has improved a bunch. Syncing is still excruciatingly slow. It took me 7 minutes to sync this morning. 30 seconds just to mount and unmount the drive. The only thing I was adding was 3 podcasts. The progress bar always shows what’s being updated and it’s always the same songs and files that haven’t changed AT ALL. I don’t get it. Hopefully they improve the syncing. Until they do, I’ll have to be sure to get it done well before Jeni comes to pick me up in the mornings.
One last note about CoverFlow, they need to add the ’skip to letter’ functionality to it as flipping through a large library takes FOREVER. Good thing I don’t use CoverFlow that often.

Last Thursday and Friday, Theo and I went into Sunset Sound to record 4 tracks. We both shared bass guitar responsibilities since Matt has decided not to continue on with us :(
In any event, it was an amazing experience. Sunset Sound’s walls are lined with platinum albums from rock’s biggest names. With the absence of The Beatles & Pink Floyd, you can get a very thorough rock and roll history lesson just by browsing the walls there. Zeppelin, The Stones, Janis, The Doors, Van Halen, and Prince have all recorded legendary albums there. The studio we were in was used to record all of The Doors albums, Janis’s “Pearl” album and Van Halen 1.
We produced the songs ourselves with Jason Gossman at the controls. Clint Welander was his assistant and an all around great guy. Jason did a kick-ass job with getting a great sound with the limited time and budget that we were investing.
I really wish we had more time and money to put into the recording but since we’re not rich rock stars, we had to make do with what was available.
Once the tracks are mastered, I’ll share them with everyone. Until then, check out some pictures.
[UPDATE] I’ve made a bit of a home for use on Virb. Check us out!!

The band I play drums in had its first gig on Saturday.
Theo (guitars & vocals) decided to throw himself a 35th birthday party on Saturday night and he rented out the Burbank Moose Lodge so we could rock out in a big way for the occasion. Needless to say, I’m really sore. I hit the drums too damn hard.
We rocked so hard that the cops had to come by and shut us down. We managed to slip in one last tune after they left so we ended it with a bang.
I’ll be posting video and pictures soon so come on back to check those out in the next few days.
Oh, we still need a name.

AppleInsider | Beatles near iTunes deal, branded iPod possible
Not that I need any Beatles albums. It would just be nice to see it happen.
